MOVIO: A Toolkit for Creating Curated Digital Exhibitions

    Get PDF
AbstractIn 2011, the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Tourism (MiBACT) published a guideline reference book analysing the state of the art and best practices of digital exhibitions made available on-line and offered a handbook successfully translated in English and even in Arabic. To satisfy the needs expressed by museum curators (but not limiting to them) GruppoMeta has implemented the MOVIO platform under the coordination of ICCU: MOVIO is a semantic CMS which provides tools to support the development of virtual/digital exhibitions, touristic and didactic applications. MOVIO supports the creation of a media archive and ‘non-scaring’ ontology builder for a storytelling approach and it allows cultural content publishing (it includes the creation of visit paths, up to mapping, time-line, galleries and social tools). The MOVIO open source SCMS platform is an easy and ready to use toolkit to build online and mobile virtual/digital exhibitions and narrations. It has begun to be experimented by several Italian institutions and several European partners from the AthenaPlus consortium

Innovative Approaches for Narrating Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage: the AthenaPlus Creative Tools

    No full text
This paper illustrates the innovative approaches proposed by the AthenaPlus project in valorising digital cultural heritage through a set of creative open source tools. In particular, we will describe CityQuest (dedicated to the discovery of cultural heritage) and MOVIO (enabling the creation of cultural narrations). Both address cultural institutions, educators, and tourism organisations who want to create digital exhibitions, thematic paths, and tourist routes, valorising both tangible and intangible heritage preserved in GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) and on the territory. The article describes the current state of development of the tools, summarizing their features and illustrating some case studies carried out by the project partners in the first phase of the project after being trained on how to best take advantage of them. Moreover, the workflow for monitoring the progress and results of the pilots is described, illustrating the methodology carried out in the virtual living labs set up for the project

Museums' Experiences in Creating Cultural Narrations Using the AthenaPlus Tool Called MOVIO

    No full text
The European funded project AthenaPlus is aimed at providing new tools to support cultural institutions to narrate their resources. This article briefly recounts the experience of museums using the AthenaPlus tool MOVIO. Some of the project pilots described their experience using this innovative platform for narrating their cultural resources. The reader will find here the description of the exhibitions made independently by each of the cultural institutions, the description of the target audiences, the use they made of MOVIO, and their plans and advice for future usage. The article describes the curators' experience using and publishing digital exhibitions
